In the newborn dog, colostrum and milk represent the major source of immunity, thanks to both specific and non-specific factors. This study was designed to verify the presence of IgG and lysozyme in peripartal mammary secretions in dogs. The results evidenced the presence of both IgG and lysozyme. However, while IgG are high and declined significantly between 1 and 2 days after parturition, lysozyme tends to remain high until day 5 after whelping. These findings highlight the importance of the soon colostrum intake after birth for IgG absorption, while the prolonged presence of lysozyme assures an extended functional non-specific immunity for the puppy
