The study was aimed at evaluating the response of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) to drip or subirrigation in the spring-summer typical growing conditions of the Mediterranean area, where salty water is often used. Four F1-hybrids (Talina, Nilo, Birgah and Black Bell) were grown into pots in trough benches in a recirculating water system. The EC value of the nutrient solution, prepared using NaCl-enriched water (10 mM), was 3.2-3.5 dS m 1 until the first fruit harvest and reduced to 2.3-2.5 dS m 1afterwards; the salinisation induced a nutrient solution turnover whenever the EC value exceeded 7.0 dS m-1.
