The oligochaete annelids, belonging to the subfamily Tubificinae, produce two types of spermatozoa: eusperm (the fertilising ones) and parasperm, protecting and carrying the eusperm. The pathway for the production of the two types is common until the onset of meiosis, but then a regular meiosis produces eusperm, whereas parasperm is generated through a peculiar mechanism of nuclear fragmentation giving rise to an irregular, but very high, number of paraspermatozoa.
