Marxisme et théorie de l’équilibre. A propos de la reconstruction de John Roemer

International audienceCan Marx’s thought be reconstructed from the neoclassical equilibrium theory? John Roemer tried to answer such a question. Together with several academics, including G.A. Cohen and Jon Elster, he was a major actor of Analytical Marxism, mainly during the 1980s. His main contribution to the debate focused on economics, and he is a central protagonist of “Neo-classical Marxism” or “Rational Choice Marxism”. For Roemer Marx’s intellectual tools date back more than a century and they are not adapted to the contemporary social science; Marx’s theory, and particularly its economic foundations, must break away from the idea that it has a methodological peculiarity. Hence he aims to reach conclusions that are close to Marx in using different methodological tools, especially hypothetical-deductive reasoning. His research program is based on the neoclassical theory of equilibrium and it aims to establish that the Marxian economic theory can be built on microeconomic foundations. We will see how Roemer, after deconstructing the labour theory of value and refuting the law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall, proposes to reconstruct the Marxian theory of exploitation on the basis of game theory, of optimizing behaviors and of the equilibrium theory. We shall discuss the consistency and the relevance of this approach, especially in focusing on the difficulty that Roemer’s results put on the assumption of a theoretical unity of the Marxian theory, and we will wonder either what is questioned is Marx’s theory or the possibility to associate it to equilibrium theory’s tools.Peut-on reconstruire sans la trahir la pensée de Marx à partir de la théorie néoclassique de l’équilibre ? C’est la question à laquelle a tenté de répondre John Roemer. Aux côtés notamment de G.A. Cohen et de Jon Elster, il fut l’un des principaux contributeurs du marxisme analytique, principalement au cours des années 1980. Son apport à ces échanges a essentiellement porté sur la théorie économique, et il est un acteur central du « marxisme néoclassique » ou « marxisme de choix rationnel ». Selon lui les outils de Marx, vieux de plus d’un siècle, ne sont plus adaptés à la science sociale contemporaine, et la théorie de Marx, en particulier ses fondements économiques, doit rompre avec l’idée qu’elle détient une spécificité méthodologique. Son objectif est alors de parvenir à des conclusions proches de celles de Marx en utilisant des outils méthodologiques différents, en particulier la démarche hypothético-déductive. Son programme de recherche se fonde sur la théorie néoclassique de l’équilibre et vise à établir la possibilité pour la théorie économique marxiste de reposer sur des fondements microéconomiques. Nous verrons comment, après avoir déconstruit la théorie marxienne de la valeur, après avoir réfute la loi de la baisse tendancielle du taux de profit, il tâche de reconstruire la théorie marxienne de l’exploitation sur la base de la théorie des jeux, de comportements optimisateurs et de la théorie de l’équilibre. Nous discuterons la cohérence et la pertinence de cette approche, en remarquant notamment que les résultats auxquels parvient Roemer mettent en difficulté l’hypothèse d’unité théorique de l’appareil marxien, et nous nous demanderons si ce qui est remis en cause est la théorie de Marx ou la possibilité de l’associer aux outils de la théorie de l’équilibre
