This study considers the enforcement of the Code Civil in the Kingdom of Naples (1809-15) and the analysis of judgments passed by Neapolitan Courts. The Napoleonic Code Civil provided two innovations unknown to the Neapolitan people: civil marriage and divorce. The study investigates how Neapolitan judges and barristers reacted to these innovations. A systematic search in archives revealed that, during the French domination, lawyers probably partially accepted the French model. The object of this study is to investigate how the Code Civil was nationalized by Neapolitan judges, using the judgments found in the Archives of cities of Southern Italy.
