Overview Stroke has a profound effect on an individual’s physical, psychological and social functioning. In Scotland, over 15,000 people have a stroke every year and therefore it is a priority area for the NHS due to its high prevalence. Areas of Scotland with less than 3000 inhabitants are classified as rural. Rural areas have a higher proportion of residents over the age of 65, and as the average age in Scotland to have a stroke is 71, there is a need for efficient stroke rehabilitation services within Scotland. The Scottish government have dedicated resources to improving rural services.
