Ageing in the Portuguese press: a gendered analysis of older people in newsmagazine Visão

O envelhecimento, como um dos desafios mais importantes do século XXI, obriga à reflexão sobre questões com importância crescente. As lentes de género são, também, importantes para a compreensão do fenómeno do envelhecimento, uma vez que a imagem social das mulheres e homens idosos é distinta. Pela sua importância social, nos últimos anos os média têm focado questões pertinentes sobre o envelhecimento, nomeadamente a alimentação, os hábitos de vida, a sexualidade, entre outras. Como é que a revista Visão tratou e deu visibilidade aos idosos e ao envelhecimento em Portugal durante o Ano Europeu do Envelhecimento Ativo (2012) e comparativamente ao ano anterior (2011) e posterior (2013)? Esta é a questão central que permeia este estudo e que deu origem a outras relacionadas com os estereótipos e a genderização deste fenómeno, quer no que diz respeito aos protagonistas assim como em relação às fontes utilizadas, o tipo de discurso, a visibilidade dada ao tema do envelhecimento e/ou aos protagonistas das peças publicadas. O corpus de análise consistiu numa análise de conteúdo com recurso ao software SPSS das 497 peças jornalísticas nas quais os protagonistas eram idosos ou que falavam sobre o envelhecimento veiculadas pela revista Visão. A seleção desta newsmagazine justifica-se pelo facto de ser a revista de informação generalista semanal mais vendida em Portugal durante o ano de 2011 (Grupo Marketest, 2011), 2012 (Ano europeu do Envelhecimento Ativo) e 2013. Da análise efetuada verifica-se que foi durante o Ano Europeu do Envelhecimento Ativo (2012) que foi dada mais visibilidade à temática do envelhecimento e/ou aos protagonistas idosos. Contudo, de um modo transversal aos três anos em estudo, o tema do envelhecimento tem pouca notoriedade. Ficou, também, claro o desfasamento existente entre a visibilidade atribuída a homens e mulheres que participaram nas peças jornalísticas como protagonistas e/ou fontes, assim como a evidente notabilidade da grande maioria dos protagonistas e/ou fontes citados.We live in a world characterized by rapid population ageing; therefore, ageing is a natural stage of the life cycle. Ageing, as one of the most important challenges of the 21st century, requires reflection on issues of growing importance. Gender lenses are also important for the understanding of the ageing phenomenon since the social image of elderly women and elderly men is different.Due to its social importance, in recent years the media has focused on pertinent issues about ageing, namely nutrition, life habits, sexuality, among others. How did the Portuguese press treat and give visibility to the elderly and the ageing process in Portugal during the years 2011, 2012 (European Year of Active Ageing), and 2013? This is the central question that pervades this study and that gave rise to others related to the stereotypes of ageing, the gendering of ageing, both with regard to the protagonists and the sources used, the type of discourse, the visibility given to the theme of ageing and/or to the protagonists of the published articles. The corpus of analysis consisted of a content analysis using SPSS software of the 497 press articles published by Visão magazine and in which the protagonists were elderly people or who spoke about the ageing process. The selection of this news magazine is justified by the fact that it was the best selling weekly general information magazine in Portugal during 2011 (Marketest Group, 2011), 2012 (European Year of Active Ageing) and 2013.The analysis shows that it was during the European Year of Active Ageing (2012) that the theme of ageing and/or the elderly became more visible. However, a closer look at the three years under study reveals the little visibility given to the ageing issues. Concerning the theme of the articles, it is concluded that "History of life", "Work/Career" and "Past Events" stood out in the three years under study. It was also evident the chasm between the visibility given to men and women Used as protagonists and/or sources, as well as the evident visibility of the great majority of the protagonists and / or sources mentioned
