Effect-based methods (EBM) are recognized as relevant tools to diagnose and monitor chemical contamination in aquatic systems, considering both known and unknown biologically active contaminants. Integrated strategies combining EBM and analytical tools are needed for holistic assessment of aquatic micropollutants and identification of causes of degraded water quality.
