Parkinson disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer disease. It affects 2 to 3 percent of those over 65 years with an age-dependent prevalence. Currently, the diagnosis of PD is hampered by the limited sensitivity and specificity of the available investigations. The diagnosis is usually made based on the clinical presentation which has a number of significant limitations. First of all, the disease has been present for decades before motor symptoms develop. Secondly, using clinical exam alone, the misdiagnosis rate remains high with both over-and under-diagnosis common.
