In the Ancien Regime, war was the normal condition: it was the major industry for State and society, a society based on the profession of arms, honour and courage.\ud The peace of Passarowitz holds an important position in European and Venetian history: it went beyond the solution of a peripheral conflict and created new problems to European culture and society. First of all, it erased one of the main excuses to start wars: religious differences or, better, the need to defend Christianity. Moreover, it seemingly removed another cause for right wars, i.e. the fear of the enemy, the threat of attacks.
