As the global mining industry often operates in remote vulnerable locations, requires large areas of land and may have negative social and environmental impacts, it was soon challenged by civil society. In this context, since the late of the 1990s, the most common response of large mining companies has been the elaboration of a corporate social and environmentally responsibility policy, recognizing their obligation to contribute to the social and environmental sustainability of the countries in which they operate.
