Ireland played no part in the events which led to the outbreak of the First World War, or the subsequent outpouring of nearly one million Belgian refugees seeking refuge in Holland, France, Britain, and Ireland. Nevertheless, subsequent events in London demonstrate that people on this side of the Irish Sea were participating in one way or another in the provision of relief for Belgian refugees.
