Higher education in Latin America. Key factors that characterize higher education in Latin America today

The document stems from the theoretical background of the research named Caracterización poblacional and from PEI** of the universities of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, developed at the University of San Buenaventura-Cali with 5 higher education institutions. The article mentions some reference points that allow us to understand the transformation of higher education in recent decades, which structure a tertiary education. The topics are organized into four categories that show diverse aspects of higher education in Latin America and make reference to the characterization of heads of departments, teachers, and students, who are the central aims of the study. These categories are: Reforms, increase of higher education, changes in student population, and changes in the teacher population.El documento nace de los antecedentes teóricos de la investigación Caracterización poblacional y de PEI de las universidades del Valle del Cauca, desarrollado en la Universidad de San Buenaventura Cali, con cinco instituciones de educación superior (IES). El artículo sitúa algunos referentes que permiten comprender las transformaciones de la educación superior en las últimas décadas, asuntos que configuran una educación terciaria otra . Los temas desarrollados se organizan en cuatro categorías que muestran múltiples visos de la educación superior en América Latina y que referencian la caracterización de directivos, docentes y estudiantes, uno de los objetivos centrales del estudio.
