This article studies the influence of television programing in the formation of a threshold for critical thinking among Latin American spectators. Based on a revision of the literature on television and popular culture, and the progressive changes towards democracy in the region, the author explores issues that emerge due to a recent growth of drug-trafficking themed soap operas. Proposed as a literature review and discussion, the author analyzes how the television industry erodes pedagogical foundations necessary to galvanize the incipient democracy in the region.
