Diese Diplomarbeit setzt sich mit der Konzeption von Gender als sozialem Konstrukt in Shakespeares Komödien "The Merchant of Venice", "Twelfth Night" und "As You Like It" auseinander. Die Handlung in diesen Stücken erscheint geprägt von Formen des theatralen Transvestismus und der Durchlässigkeit des Gender-Begriffs. Das Spiel der Protagonistinnen mit männlicher Identität hinterfragt auf einer Metaebene, was es heißt, eine Frau zu sein (oder sich zumindest als solche zu verkleiden).
