International audienceTwo Gravettian sites in the Landes department of southwestern France – Tercis and Brassempouy – produced evidence for apprentice flint knappers. The Late Gravettian (23,000 non cal. BP) 'backed pieces' assemblage from Tercis is currently the only European Upper Palaeolithic example of a complete "chaîne opératoire" for the production of projectile elements by an apprentice knapper known from a knapping workshop. The Gravettian from 'sector I' of Brassempouy, attributed to a middle phase of this technocomplex with Noailles burins (26,000 non cal.
