How do we teach writing in primary school? How can we ensure that children with a complex relationship to writing, do write and enjoy it? There are many ways to teach writing to children but not all of them mobilize the engagement of pupils. The research presented in this essay approaches the different obstacles that the pupils may encounter during writing exercises and suggests a way to overcome these obstacles: a picture. Why a picture? Because it has several interests to initiate and start writing. A teaching sequence conducted in a class of CM1-CM2, inviting the pupils to seize a picture in order to produce a text, made it possible to underline the interest of using a picture in writing, emerging four important functions of the picture ...
