Les sports gaéliques et la diaspora irlandaise : les identités articulées

International audienceIn Ireland, Gaelic football and hurling are the two most popular team sports, well ahead of soccer and rugby. Both are placed under the auspices of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which was created in 1884 as a means of countering British cultural imperialism. As the sport’s expression of imagined Irishness, Gaelic games are played almost exclusively in Ireland as well as in a few countries with a strong Irish diaspora, especially in the United States, Great Britain and continental Europe. For those Irish men and women who were driven out of the country by the famine across the Atlantic, playing Gaelic games still is, to some extent, a means of settling in as well as of making an identity and political statement. However, in Great Britain, where the traditional Gaelic sports scene is being overshadowed by its university counterpart, the weight of the country’s fight for independence as well as conservatism conveyed by the GAA have largely disappeared. This development derives from the economic, social and ideological revolution Ireland went through over the last twenty to thirty years. This might be the reason why Gaelic games are being played by an ever-growing number of cousins in Brittany and Galicia and are spreading across Europe.En Irlande, le football gaélique et le hurling sont bien plus populaires que le football (soccer) et le rugby. Ils sont tous deux placés sous l’égide du Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), créé en 1884 pour s’opposer à l’impérialisme culturel de l’occupant britannique. Expression sportive d’une irlandité imaginée, la pratique de sports gaéliques s’est développée dans les pays d’accueil de la nombreuse diaspora irlandaise sous l’impulsion de militants de la cause indépendantiste. Cependant, hors des frontières de l’île, le GAA n’est plus guère implanté aujourd’hui qu’aux États-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne. En outre, bien qu’outre-Atlantique, il conserve le souvenir d’une histoire marquée par la lutte pour l’indépendance de l’Irlande et la réunification de l’île, en Grande-Bretagne, les nouvelles générations de pratiquant.e.s se sont largement affranchies de son héritage révolutionnaire. Car au cours des vingt à trente dernières années, l’Irlande a connu une véritable révolution économique, sociale et idéologique. Entre nostalgie d’une révolution inachevée et mondialisation, l’essor significatif des sports gaéliques en Europe continentale en général et en Bretagne en particulier offre un exemple assez rare de diffusion de pratique sportive au vingt-et-unième siècle
