International audienceThis paper, based on case-studies of new editions and adaptations of Homers’ Odyssey published in French in France since 2000, analyzes the role of the publisher in the translation of a classical text, more specifically in selecting a translation of the text, and in translating it into a book. A classical text, a culturally and economically assured value, is translated into many languages but also in finitely reeditedinto many versions that perpetuate and transform it. Each versioncapitalizes on the symbolic value of the “great author” and contributes to the redistribution of the authorship between the author and those who translate it, adapt it, illustrate it or comment on it.
