Background: Irisin is a myokine secreted by skeletal muscle during physical activity. Irisin treatment increased cortical bone mineral density (BMD) in young healthy mice and restored bone and muscle mass loss in a mouse model of disuse-induced osteoporosis and muscular atrophy.
