Analysts and politicians, and even Arab rulers themselves, continually highlighted a ‘zero-sum’ equation which illustrates the regional scenario: either stability under what Jack Goldstone refers to as “sultanistic” dictatorships, or dominant political Islam constituting the only alternative.
