Show me the money. The origins of the American prosperity gospel and its significance today

Das Prosperity Gospel (dt. Wohlstandsevangelium) ist eine Variante des Pfingstchristentums und wird in einigen der größten Kirchen der USA gepredigt. Zusammengefasst lehrt das Prosperity Gospel, dass gute Christen durch Gottes Wille und das Versprechen der Erlösung bedingt, Anrecht auf materiellen Wohlstand und physische Gesundheit haben, die sie durch die Technik der “Positive Confession” (dt. positives Bekenntnis) erlangen können. Bei dieser Praxis müssen die gewünschten Ziele nicht nur innerlich gewollt, sondern auch laut und deutlich ausgesprochen werden. Positives Denken spielt dabei eine ausgesprochen wichtige Rolle. In dieser Arbeit werden vor allem die Ursprünge und Einflüsse, die zur Entstehung des modern Prosperity Gospel geführt haben, beleuchtet: Das Pfingstchristentum und die charismatische Bewegung sowie ihre jeweiligen Schwerpunkte zum Thema göttliche Heilung; New Thought (dt. Neugeist-Bewegung), eine religiöse Bewegung, die sich Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts vor allem mit der Kraft des menschlichen Geistes beschäftigte; der Einfluss der Selbsthilfe-Kultur in den USA und im speziellen das einflussreiche Werk “The Power of Positive Thinking” von Norman Vincent Peale; und schließlich das kraftvolle Narrativ des amerikanischen Traums. Aus diesen verschieden Ursprüngen formte sich vor allem durch die Predigten und Publikationen Kenneth E. Hagins ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts das moderne Prosperity Gospel, bzw. die Word of Faith Bewegung, wie sie oft genannt wird. Der besondere Zugang der Strömung zu (gottgewolltem) Wohlstand und Gesundheit, die gelebte Praxis, sowie populäre Erklärungsmodelle von Prosperity Predigern werden beleuchtet. Auch auf die Kritik an diesem Glaubensmodell wird eingegangen. Das Prosperity Gospel hat bis heute nicht nur in US-amerikanischen Kirchen wesentliche Bedeutung, sondern wurde auch äußerst erfolgreich exportiert, vor allem nach Afrika.Some of the largest churches in the United States teach the prosperity gospel, a special variety of Pentecostalism. In short, this doctrine says that believers can gain material possessions and good health via the technique of positive confession, which requires the verbal declaration or affirmation of a desired end. This has been granted through the atonement of Jesus and is part of the promise of salvation. In this thesis, the origins and influences that have led to the development of the modern prosperity gospel are explored: Pentecostalism and Charismatic Christianity and their take on divine healing; late 19th century New Thought and its focus on the power of the human mind; the rise of self-help culture and in particular Norman Vincent Peale’s popular book The Power of Positive Thinking; and finally, the powerful narrative of the American Dream. Finally, preacher Kenneth E. Hagin has helped to form and popularize the prosperity gospel – also referred to as Word of Faith movement – in the mid-20th century. The thesis further analyzes its unique approach towards health and wealth, including its practice, criticism, as well as the arguments used by preachers to support their teachings. The movement is still very popular in the United States today, but has also been successfully exported, particularly to Africa
