Estimating the Effect of the Euro on intra-European Trade using a new Distance Metric

Seit der letzten Finanzkrise stehen die Europäische Union und insbesondere der Euro in zunehmender Kritik. Empirische Studien unter Verwendung von Gravitationsmodellen legten bisher geringe Auswirkungen der Gemeinschaftswährung auf inter-Europäischen Handel nahe. Das Verstehen und korrekte Quantifizieren dieser Auswirkungen sind deshalb von Bedeutung, weil positive und negative Effekte des Euro ganzheitlich betrachtet und gegeneinander abgewogen werden sollten. Diese Arbeit erfüllt drei Zwecke: Sie trägt zur Literatur über und somit zum Verständnis von handelsstimulierenden Effekten des Euro bei. Weiters, und das ist der wichtigste Beitrag der Arbeit, tut sie dies unter der Verwendung einer neuartigen Distanzmetrik zur Messung von Entfernungen zwischen Staaten. Zuletzt ist es aufgrund der hohen Datenqualität möglich, die Verzerrung zu bestimmen, welche durch fehlende Datenpunkte auftreten kann.The European Union in general and the euro in particular have faced increasing criticism since the last financial crisis. The gravity model of trade, the workhorse of international trade literature, has been successfully utilized to estimate negligible trade stimulating effects of the euro. It is important to quantify this effect properly in order to be able to put it into perspective with other positive and negative stimuli associated with the euro. This paper aims to fulfill three purposes: First, it adds to the literature about the trade stimulating effect of the euro. Second, and this is the main purpose of the paper, it introduces a new metric for measuring distances between countries. Third, the use of a balanced panel data set makes it possible to determine the bias due to missing observations and mistreatment thereof
