A sequenciação de genomas mitocondriais completos de espécies de búzios do (sub)género Africonus, endémicos de Cabo Verde, permitiu reconstruir as relações filogenéticas entre estas e delimitar e validar o estatuto taxonómico das mesmas. Embora hoje se saiba que muitas espécies descritas são na verdade sinonímias, existem ainda algumas que apresentam divergências nas sequências de ADN suficientemente robustas para merecerem o estatuto de espécie.
