This paper explores the ways in which individual activity is affected by the larger structural environment of society. Multiple meanings are contrasted with truth, and the idea that certain truths are unjustly privileged over others are explored. In the following discussion, I present my interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives on urban schooling. Specifically, I focus on a particular theorization posited by phenomenologists, namely that people communicate through the use of symbols, which can be confusing as symbols can have multiple meanings and differ from culture to culture. Incorporating the theory of phenomenology allows me to explain why certain information is disseminated in urban school classrooms
