There is a debate of the relative merits of the reversible procedure of deep brain stimulation versus the cheaper irreversible ablation for severe anorexia nervosa. We argue that in the case of anorexia nervosa, where the ability of the patient to feel able to control their own recovery, there are ethical concerns over neurosurgical ablation which render deep brain stimulation preferable
