El Estado democrático en América Latina: hacia el desarrollo de líneas de investigación

The heterogeneity of the origins of the national State in Latin America, despite temporal coincidences in the processes of Emancipation, does not allow us to talk of a single model. Nevertheless, despite the differences, there are common elements, like the difficulties in achieving a satisfactory economic and social development, and the persistence of military interventions in politics during the greater part of its history. After sketching its historical roots, the article analyzes the relationship between the State and four key instances ¿the sub-national states, institutions of civil society, actors in the market and those of relevance in the supra-national scenario¿ with a view to suggesting elements for a debate over the existing possibilities and limitations for building an authentically democratic State in Latin America.La heterogeneidad en los orígenes del Estado nacional en América Latina, a pesar de la coincidencia temporal en los procesos de emancipación, impide hablar de un único modelo. Sin embargo, pese a las diferencias, hay algunos elementos comunes, como las dificultades para alcanzar el desarrollo económico y social pleno y la persistente interrupción militar durante buena parte de la historia. Tras recorrer sus orígenes históricos, el artículo analiza la relación entre el Estado y cuatro instancias claves ¿los Estados subnacionales, las instituciones de la sociedad civil, los actores del mercado y los del ámbito supranacional¿ con el objetivo de plantear algunas líneas de debate acerca de las posibilidades y los límites para la construcción de un Estado auténticamente democrático en América Latina
