Although not plagued by religious and political extremisms, and made up of countries that are formally democratic and respectful of human rights, Latin America is nowadays a heterogeneous region that occupies a marginal role in the international system, and that is divided into two groups: those countries situated north of the Panama Canal, increasingly integrated into the sphere dominated by the United States; and South America, which is immersed in the laborious task of construing an alternative under the leadership, as of yet not consolidated, of Brazil.
