As redemption or oppression, the prison has always been present in the cinema. This article analyzes two Latin American examples: Deshonra, which by relating the story of a woman unjustly imprisoned describes the transformations of Peronist Argentina; and Carandiru, which takes the massacre in a Sao Paulo prison in 1992 as an expression of the feelings of insecurity and fear in contemporary society.
