The archaeology and history of ancient Qatna (= Tell Mishrife) in Syria has been rather obscure over the past 75 years after the initial excavations by Robert du Mesnil du Buisson between 1926-1929. However, the situation changed dramatically in September 2002 when an international archaeological expedition discovered an archive containing 63 tablets written in cuneiform and dating between 1400-1350 BC. The discovery provides a good backdrop to revisit the geography, archaeology and history of Qatna. This study firstly provides a description of the recent discovery, followed by a discussion of the geography, topography and archaeology of Tell Mishrife.
