Literary analysis has often been considered an irrelevant and even peripherical tool in Biblical Studies that have often been mostly preoccupied with historical questions. In the last 25 years, however, it has become one of the most widely used approaches in academic studies, as it casts a skeptical look on the external referential qualities of the text and deals predominantly with its internal relationships. In the process, it applies the same methods of traditional literary criticism outside the field of Biblical Studies, as it attempts to understand the biblical text itself as a pattern of meaning and effect.
