Purpose: To compare the structural effects produced on the lens capsule and epithelium by capsulorhexis (CCC) and diathermic capsulotomy (DC) of different diameters. Setting: Ophthalmology Section. University Hospital of the Canary Islands. Methods: During routine cataract surgery cases after performing a CCC or a DC of 4.5, 5.5 or 6.5 mm in diameter, we saved the extracted anterior capsular fragment and sent it to the pathologist. The histopathological study consisted in hematoxylin-eosin and PAS stains together with the histomorphometric analysis of semithin sections stained with toluidine blue. The pathologist was blinded to the technique used. Results: Histomorphometry showed an average epithelial cell size of 12-15 microns. CCC capsule...
