In ancient times the maximum spread of wine production in the far west of the Iberian Peninsula must have been contemporary with the period of Roman rule. However, the information available in literary sources is scarce. Thus, only archaeological research can provide information on the geography of wine production and the chronology of its introduction and spread. The use of archaeological sources requires the discussion at "visibility" problems which, so far, have received little attention. An essay on the history of wine in the area of the Roman province of Lusitania is presented.
