Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2018Forests across the western United States experienced profound changes throughout the 20th century in response to human resource use such as logging, grazing, and mining as well as very effective fire suppression, followed in some areas by fire reintroduction. In the Sierra Nevada of California, these changes include increases in forest density and fuel loads and a compositional shift away from fire tolerant tree species toward fire intolerant species. Many of the ecosystem functions and services that humans rely on in California, such as provision of water and habitat and fire resistance, have been degraded by this forest change.
