Influence of pre-slaughter factors on the incidence of myopathy in broiler chickens

Due to the improvement in the broiler performance of broiler chickens, the appearance of harmful muscle alterations has been observed in the industry. These are known as myopathies, affecting mainly the pectoral muscle of birds. These are Deep Pectoral Myopathy (MPP), wooden breast (WB), better known as "wooden breast" and white striping (WS). This study evaluated the incidence of myopathy within the industry and correlated with the number of heads of the lot, live weight, gender (male and female), lineage (A, B and C) and distance from farm to refrigerator. Data were collected from all batches slaughtered in a refrigerator located in northern Paraná, Brazil, from January to September 2017, and analyzed statistically to correlate with the incidence of myopathy. Statistical models of Poisson regression, quasi-Poisson regression and negative binomial regression were estimated. The number of heads per plot presented a linear relation with the number of birds with myopathy. There was a relative increase of 73.9% in the number of birds with myopathy in male chickens. For each kilometer from the farm to the slaughterhouse there was a relative increase of 0.06% in the number of birds with myopathy. There was a strong correlation between the number of birds with myopathy and live weight. Lineage A showed the greatest dispersion in the number of birds with myopathy, but there was no significant difference between the lines. In conclusion, the incidence of myopathy is of great concern and can affect more severely birds that come from more distant places, are males, with more heads and live weight in the lot.Devido à melhora no rendimento do peito de frangos de corte observou-se na indústria o surgimento de alterações musculares prejudiciais. Sendo elas conhecidas como miopatias, acometendo principalmente o músculo peitoral das aves. São elas, a Miopatia Peitoral Profunda (MPP), wooden breast (WB), mais conhecida como “peito de madeira” e white striping (WS). Este estudo avaliou a incidência de miopatia dentro da indústria e correlacionou com os fatores número de cabeças do lote, peso vivo, gênero (macho e fêmea), linhagem (A, B e C) e distância em quilômetros da granja até o frigorífico. Foram coletados os dados numéricos de todos lotes abatidos em um frigorífico situado no norte do Paraná, Brasil, compreendidos no período de janeiro a setembro de 2017, e analisados estatisticamente para correlacionar com a incidência da miopatia. Para isso foram estimados os modelos estatísticos de regressão Poisson, regressão quase-Poisson e regressão binomial negativa. O número de cabeças por lote apresentou relação linear com o número de aves com miopatia. Houve um aumento relativo de 73,9% no número de aves com miopatia em frangos machos. Para cada quilômetro de distância da granja até o frigorífico houve um aumento relativo de 0,06% no número de aves com miopatia. Observou-se uma forte correlação entre o número de aves com miopatia e o peso vivo. A linhagem A foi a que apresentou maior dispersão no número de aves com miopatia, porém não houve diferença significativa entre as linhagens. Em conclusão, a incidência de miopatia é de grande preocupação e pode afetar mais severamente aves que provêm de locais mais distantes, são machos, com maior número de cabeças e peso vivo no lote
