The oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds represents a convenient strategy for the selective introduction of carbon-acceptor units into carbohydrate-based starting materials from renewable resources. A simple system to accomplish this transformation is by using flavin-containing alcohol oxidases.
