An electrolytic aerating bioreactor was used to partially nitrify ammonia from wastewater. Activated sludge was cultured for 8 months to increase the population of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and then used in the bioreactor. The maximum ammonia removal rate was 0.64 mM NH3/l h in a 50 ml reactor using 5.4 g mixed liquor suspended solids per litre of AOB-dominant activated sludge. 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V
