Optical wavelengths are an alternative to radio-frequency for future satellite-ground data transmissions. They are envisaged for future satellite telemetry systems (downlink optical links from LEO satellites) or communication (bidirectional optical links with GEO satellites). While going through the atmosphere the optical wave is affected by atmospheric turbulence. This may result in fading and surges when the incident flux is coupled to a single-mode optical fiber.
