Comparison between sampling methods for population size estimation

RESUMEN: El problema de estimar poblaciones de tamaños muy grandes es muy recurrente en la actualidad y es de gran utilidad en campos como las ciencias sociales o la biología. Centrándonos en los métodos semiautomáticos, vamos a considerar dos métodos de muestreo para estimar el tamaño o número de partículas de una población a través de fotografías fijas de la misma. La diferencia entre ambos va a radicar en si tomar una única ventana de muestreo o una rejilla de ventanas de muestreo. A partir de poblaciones conocidas analizaremos el comportamiento de ambos métodos para dar unas conclusiones sobre la calidad de la estimación.ABSTRACT: Estimating populations of very large sizes is a very common problem nowadays and it is really useful in fields such as social sciences or biology. Focusing on semi-automatic methods, we will consider two methods of sampling to estimate the number of particles, using aerial photographs of some populations. The first method uses a single sampling window or quadrat, whereas the second uses a grid of quadrats. Starting from known populations, we will analyze the behavior of both methods to give, in the end the conclusions about the quality of the estimator.Grado en Matemática
