Animal studies have shown that noise exposure that causes temporary threshold shifts may lead to synaptopathy between the inner hair cells and the auditory nerve. Extrapolation to humans suggests that noise exposure can lead to auditory lesions undiagnosed by threshold tonal audiometry (so called “hidden hearing loss”). However, recent studies disagree about the presence of cochlear synaptopathy in normal hearing humans.
