International audienceSince the 16th century, Marseille has played a leading role in trade between the East and West of the Mediterranean, "Ottoman lake" until the 19th century. In these exchanges the share of ceramics has always been marginal, but it is a significant material index. The discovery in the "Levant" of jars from Biot, pots from Vallauris, from Huveaune, or tiles from Marseille illustrates the power and diffusion of the great Provencal centres. Other artifacts testify in return to more intangible material and "cultural" exchanges based on new tastes, fashions and aesthetics.
