Spatial orientation and navigation are controlled by specific neuronal circuits and elements. The presubiculum, a transitional cortical area of the parahippocampal formation, is located between the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex, and it participates in spatial navigation in animals and humans. More than half of presubicular neurons are head direction cells that fire as a function of the directional heading.
