This doctoral dissertation analyses the social processes enabling women to access historically male-dominated positions. Drawing on the sociology of gender, music, education and work, it explores women’s entry into the world of traditional music instrumentalists in Greece. Based on biographical interviews, archives, institutional sources and quantitative data, the dissertation shows that feminization over the past thirty years has been fuelled by two processes: the formalization of instrumental learning, particularly in the school system, and the expansion of employment opportunities in the field of traditional music revival.
