This chapter outlines this transformation of Italian wine production from the beginning of the 19th century to World War One In the next Section we show how important wine-growing was in the Italian economy and we describe the main features of wine-growing. Section Three outlines the main trends in production, consumption and prices from Unification to 1938. Section Four deals with improvements in quality, combining anecdotal evidence with late 1930s data. Section Five analyzes the exports. Section Six concludes
