Urban reconfiguration of mid-sized mexican cities in the Latin American context. The case of Metepec, Mexico

Cities have experienced strong social-spatial transformations in the past decades as a result of global changes that modify traditional ways of understanding and socializing urban spaces. This article addresses the social-spatial elitization and change processes within the Municipality of Metepec, Mexico, belonging to the Metropolitan Area of Toluca (ZMT), the growth of with is strongly linked to the Metropolitan Area of the Mexican Valley (ZMVM), the largest in Latin America. The findings show how global change processes, including gentrification of urban peripheries, burst in in a traditionally farming and artisanal local space, developing strong transformation within it and greater social-spatial segregation. Finally, the article helps understand the current reconfiguration of mid-sized Mexican cities within the Latin American context.En las últimas décadas, las ciudades han experimentado fuertes transformaciones socio-espaciales, como efecto de los cambios globales que modifican la forma tradicional de entender y socializar los espacios urbanos. El presente artículo aborda los procesos de cambio y elitización socio-espacial que se viven al interior del municipio de Metepec, México, perteneciente a la Zona Metropolitana de Toluca (ZMT), cuyo crecimiento se liga fuertemente a la Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México (ZMVM), la más grande de Latinoamérica. Los resultados muestran cómo procesos globales de cambio, como es la gentrificación de la periferia urbana, irrumpen en un espacio local que era tradicionalmente agrícola y artesanal, generando fuertes transformaciones en su interior y mayor segregación socio-espacial. Finalmente, el artículo permite entender la manera en que opera la actual reconfiguración de las ciudades intermedias mexicanas dentro del contexto latinoamericana
