Emotions have important implications for learning, achievement, retention, and well-being. However, the role of emotion regulation in achievement situations remains an underexplored topic of research. The purpose of this dissertation is to address this gap by exploring important theoretical, methodological, and empirical issues on emotion regulation in higher education. A review of current theories of emotion and emotion regulation indicates that these theories provide a partial explanation of emotion regulation in achievement situations.
