Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of blindness in children. The hallmark of ROP is the invasion of misguided proliferating neovessels, also called tufts, in the vitreous body. Such pathologic neovascularization (NV) is thought to be the result of excessive vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion by macroglial cells, transcribed under the control of the hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). Conditions resulting in the stabilization of HIF-1α in astrocytes and Müller cells (macroglia) would, therefore, contribute to pathologic NV in ROP.
