A recent initiative in the use of additive manufacturing for repair has prompted the need to segment defect regions from 3D point cloud scans of damaged aerospace surfaces. This research presents two novel contributions relating to the collection and segmentation of unorganized point cloud data, that together allow for the localization of defect regions in machine tool coordinates. First, a method is developed to produce textured point clouds by registering images to laser scans collected using a coordinate measuring machine system.
