Note:The behaviour of some phenolic compounds interacting with montmorillonite clay is studied. Montmorillonite acts as an electron acceptor element(s) and has the ability to oxidize phenols to phenol oligomers. Factors such as pH, exchangeable cation and water play a role on montmorillonite's ability to oxidize phenols to oligomers. Montmorillonite has greatest ability to oxidize phenols at pH < 4 and pH> 8. At low pH, clay undergoes dissolution thereby exposing more electron acceptor elements responsible for phenol oxidation (crystal edge aluminum, Fe3+, etc.).
