Note:The purpose of this research was to describe nursing clinical decision-making in the context of emergency telephone interactions. Using a methodological framework combining performance evaluation and cognitive methods of knowledge representation, nurses were tested in the natural telephone triage situations. The results show that nurses use forward reasoning and pattern recognition strategies in problem-solving. Professional and domain-related experience, including relevant everyday experiences, were associated with higher performance. Nurses' decision-making varied across urgency categories and was primarily based on a holistic approach.
